A plea to listen to the tiny whisper in the storm of racism

A plea in light of Charlottesville, Virginia, and the 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A

Dear bishops, priests, and deacons, and any who will be preaching this Sunday,

I know you’ve worked hard already on your homily for this weekend, and the thought of starting over is discouraging. But please don’t be afraid to give the “tiny whispering sound” of the Spirit space to speak to the terrifying storm that is engulfing our nation at this very moment.

The brave clergy of Charlottesville walk with you to the pulpit this weekend, and your assemblies are thirsting to see God’s kindness. Take courage. Do not doubt that you can speak the truth in Christ, a truth where justice and peace shall kiss. Take heart, and do not be afraid. We are praying for you.
